November to March is the ideal window — temperatures stay between 18°C and 30°C, perfect for outdoor sightseeing, desert safaris and beach days. Summer (June–September) is extremely hot (40°C+) but hotels offer deep discounts. Ramadan can be a wonderful time to experience Emirati culture, though some daytime dining is restricted.

Citizens of most Western countries (USA, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, Japan and many others) receive a free visa on arrival valid for 30 days, renewable once. GCC nationals (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman) enter visa-free. Many other nationalities can apply for an e-visa at icp.gov.ae before travelling. Always verify current rules with the UAE embassy in your country.

The UAE Dirham (AED) is pegged to the US Dollar at approximately 3.67 AED/USD. ATMs are everywhere and accept most international cards. Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops. Currency exchange kiosks in malls offer competitive rates.

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Many restaurants add a service charge (10–15%). For taxis, rounding up is common. Tour guides typically receive 10–15% of the tour price. Hotel porters, housekeeping and valet staff are customarily tipped 5–10 AED per service.

Abu Dhabi is one of the world's safest cities for tourists. Violent crime is extremely rare, and the UAE has some of the lowest crime rates globally. Standard precautions apply: avoid public displays of affection, respect dress codes at mosques, and be mindful that alcohol is only served in licensed venues. Tap water is safe but bottled water is widely preferred.

Yes — Abu Dhabi has excellent 4G/5G coverage. Tourist SIM cards from Etisalat (e&) or du are available at the airport and shopping malls. Wi-Fi is standard in all hotels, cafes and restaurants. Note that some VoIP services (WhatsApp calls, FaceTime) may be restricted; a local SIM with a data plan works around this.

Abu Dhabi uses 220–240V / 50Hz with UK-style Type G three-pin sockets. US devices (110V/60Hz) need a voltage converter as well as a plug adapter. European devices need only a plug adapter. Most modern electronics auto-detect the voltage and only need a plug adapter.

Taxis and ride-hailing apps (Careem, Uber) are the most convenient way to get around. The Hafilat public bus network covers much of the city but is slow. Renting a car is worthwhile for day trips to Al Ain or the desert. There is no metro in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) is served by direct flights from most major cities worldwide.

Arabic is the official language of the UAE, but English is widely spoken and understood throughout Abu Dhabi — in hotels, restaurants, shops and by most service staff. You can travel comfortably without speaking Arabic. Signage is bilingual (Arabic and English) across the emirate.

Lightweight, modest clothing is recommended. In public areas, cover shoulders and knees — though beach resorts and hotel pools have no restrictions on swimwear. At mosques (including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque), women must cover hair, arms and legs; men must cover shoulders and legs. Abayas and headscarves are available to borrow at the Grand Mosque entrance. Avoid revealing clothing in souks and shopping malls.

Entry is free. The complex on Saadiyat Island houses a mosque, a church, and a synagogue designed by David Adjaye. Allow 1.5–2 hours. It is genuinely distinctive — there is nothing quite like it elsewhere in the Arab world.

The cheapest option is the Hafilat A1 bus (4 AED, 45–60 minutes to Central Bus Station — buy a Hafilat card at the bus terminal in arrivals). Metered taxis cost 65–90 AED and take 30–40 minutes. Careem/Uber run 55–80 AED. Private transfers are not worth the 130–200 AED premium over metered taxis for the same journey.

Yes. A realistic daily budget is 200–300 AED (50–75 EUR) covering accommodation in a budget hotel or hostel, cheap meals at local restaurants, and free or low-cost sights. The Grand Mosque is free. Many beaches are free. Public buses cost 2–4 AED. Theme parks and luxury hotels are not required.

Dubai is louder, faster, and better connected. Abu Dhabi is calmer, more cultural, and cheaper for accommodation. For a first UAE trip, most visitors find 2–3 days in Dubai plus a day-trip to Abu Dhabi works well. Spending more than 2 days in Abu Dhabi suits culture seekers, mosque visitors, and families who want Yas Island without the Dubai crowds.

Yes — it is one of the more family-friendly cities in the Middle East. It is very safe, extremely clean, has world-class theme parks, and children are genuinely welcomed almost everywhere.

The oasis walking paths cover about 3km of shaded routes through 147,000 date palms. A relaxed walk takes 60–90 minutes. Combine with the adjacent Palace Museum (45–60 minutes, free) for a solid morning. Plan a full day if you want to also visit the zoo, camel market, and Jebel Hafeet.

Yes. Corniche Beach is well-maintained, lifeguarded, and free. Al Bateen Beach is a quieter free alternative. Paid beach clubs offer better facilities but the public beaches are genuinely decent.

Budget eats (15–50 AED) are excellent — Lebanese, South Asian, and shawarma joints are everywhere. Mid-range runs 100–200 AED per person. Fine dining is cheaper than London or New York equivalents. Alcohol only in licensed hotel venues.
